5 manuscript volumes contain historical notes, excerpts of letters and documents, and agricultural notes. The first volume, marked by Gayarre as Journal Vol. 4, 1843-1844, is chiefly in French and contains notes and excerpts of letters and includes contemporary newspaper clippings. (This volume is part of Mss. #1282, Gayarre, Charles. Papers. Other volumes belong to Mss. 4688, Gayarre, Charles. Journals.) The second volume, marked by Gayarre as Journal Vol. 5, 1844-1847, is chiefly in French and contains manuscript transcriptions of excerpts of letters and documents, with French and English language newspaper clippings, some are reviews of Gayarre's published History of Louisiana. The third volume was marked by Gayarre as Journal Vol. 6, 1847-1849, 1855. Correspondence Vol. 1- 1835-1837. The volume is fragmentary and chiefly contains excerpts of letters in French and English, and newspaper clippings. The fourth and fifth volumes lack title pages. The fourth contains agricultural notes on rye, wheat, barley, buckwheat, red clover, timothy, and Hungarian grass. The bulk of the volume consists of a draft of "A Sketch of General Jackson by Himself, with historical notes on Louisiana history and politics and American political figures. The essay is signed "Saratoga, Sept. 15, 1856." Included is a list of Opelousas court cases, 1872. The fifth volume is fragmentary and contains a draft of the biography of General Jackson, with agricultural notes, 1864-1665, 1868. A handwritten manuscript copy (in French) consisting of 26 chapters for the book HISTORY OF LOUISIANA, composed ca. 1845 by Gayarre.

Charles-Étienne Arthur Gayarré (January 9, 1805 – February 11, 1895) was an American historian, attorney, slaveowner and politician born to a Spanish and French Creole planter family in New Orleans, Louisiana. A Confederate sympathizer and a writer of plays, essays, and novels, Gayarré is chiefly remembered for his histories of Louisiana and his exposé of US Army general James Wilkinson as a Spanish spy.
